Five Years

July 2008.  I moved to Richmond, Virginia with naïve wonderment, hopes, and dreams, and very little plans.  One year later I had already formed amazing friendships and relationships with great people.  The first and most important was with my friend Jess.  We did practically everything together including late night weekend shenanigans.  We have seen ups and downs, relationships rise and fall, good nights full of Baltimore Zoos and not so good nights full of PBR.  Dancing the night away, walking the city during the day, and living like girls in their early to mid-twenties.  Fast forward to July 2014.  We are standing in line outside the Byrd Theater, she in yoga pants, I in sweats, mumbling about how late this movie was starting (945pm), and watching all of the people drive by with their windows down yelling about how much fun they’re going to have in just a few short hours.  Here we are, both now in the third decade of our lives, decked in flip flops and pony tails at ten o’clock at night and I looked at her and said, “You know, five years ago we would be in your room sitting on the floor in front of your mirror putting on makeup, beers in hand, getting ready to go join them.”  She looked at me and said, “What a difference five years makes.”

She was right.  I wouldn’t change my life for the world.  I’ve been able to have wonderful life experiences, good and bad.  I’ve gone through the entire progression of young adult life to adult life and made it out of the other side wiser and better for it.  I can’t even imagine how much wisdom I’ll accrue during my 30s.  And I’m not saying at all that Jess and I are duds by any means, because when we go out, we go ALL out, it is just less frequent and usually a holiday or a special occasion or a wild hair, but that’s neither here nor there.  The point is this:  Look at where you were five years ago.  Look at all of the life you’ve been able to live, all those phenomenal days, both good and bad.  Now, just imagine the next.  And will you have a friend or partner good enough to weather the ride with you and stand by your side in elastic clothing and smile as you realize how long you’ve been taking the hits together?  I hope you do.

Goings On

This past week has been a blur.  Busy would be an understatement.  I’ve taken time to get out and try a few new places (which you’ll see here this week!), spend some time with friends, and even went on a little shopping trip for myself.  I am really enjoying spring here in Richmond, VA.  The weather has had it’s ups and downs, but most of the weekends recently have been gorgeous!  I am trying to take full advantage!

Capital Coffee & Desserts is a great place to grab a coffee and a treat.  This little delight is their chocolate, caramel tart.  I’m telling you, it is worth every. single. calorie.

This week I tried Yoplait’s new smoothie mixes.  I tried the chocolate strawberry and the chocolate banana.  I have to say the banana was my favorite, but I believe that was because I made it creamier than the first try with the strawberry.  All you have to do is pull the bag from the freezer, rip it open, pour in the contents, add some milk (I used 2% regular ol’ cow’s milk, however soy or almond would be great with it!), and blend!  It was very easy.  I would also venture to say that adding some alcohol would also be a plus if you want to use it for that reason.  Verdict:  I’ll definitely purchase again so that I can have a bag in my freezer for an occasional treat!

I ran to the local liquor store for shenanigans with a friend because I heard Van Gogh Espresso was on clearance.  I got it for $10 off a bottle.  That’s only $12.50 a bottle after sale!!  For this brand and type of liquor that is a great deal so I grabbed the last 2 bottles they had.  I originally tried this when my Uncle Chris brought some home with him so that we could try a dab in our coffee.  He calls it adding some “love” to his cup of joe.  So I fell in love with “love” and I have to tell you, it is even great over ice with a dash of cream liquor.

I went to Target after work one evening because a co-worker said, “Hey do you want to come to Target with me?” and that’s not even a question one would need to ask me.  Thus, here are my grabs for the night.  I got some nude sandals on clearance, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, It’s Complicated on DVD for $5, and they had a sale for BOGO 1/2 off jewelry, so I snagged a couple of chandelier earrings.  I love wearing snazzy earrings with a simple skirt and basic tank or tee in the summer, especially when it is so hot I have to throw my hair up in a bun.  It just makes it a touch dressier while still being comfy casual.

Here’s some of my outfits for the week:

A lot of my clothes are purchased on sale or clearance or even thrifted.  Coupons, sales, and free shipping are my friends.  I love finding great pieces for an even better price!  A few of my favorite stores are consignment stores, thrift stores, or TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, and Ross.  If I can find it for cheap, I love it even more!

I hope you’re having a great week and I appreciate you stopping by!

Goings On

Hi!  Here’s what has been going on with me:

This week has been a great one for changes outside.  There are promises of summer sprouting all over the trees.  Everything has become green within just a few days.  The once blossoming trees with pretty little petals have now been taken over by tiny leaves.  I got out a little and tried to enjoy the rapid transition.  The city I live in just keeps getting more and more beautiful to me & I take each chance I can to snap pretty pictures.

I went with a friend to get a cupcake from Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe & to see the movie Heaven Is For Real (I took down a package of tissues like a baby champ).  My friend stood strong and I left red faced and swollen eyed.  It was really attractive, let me tell you.  On a scale of One – to – Kim Kardashian, my cry face is reality TV gold.  The day was a success though; my friend is now as addicted as I am to Pearl’s Cupcakes (seriously, hands down best cupcakes in Richmond, Virginia – I even got an extra one to take home for breakfast the following morning) and the movie was great!  I’m guessing I have to read the book now, huh?  I think I did that backwards.

(Cupcakes shown are: Red Velvet, Coconut Cream, and Black & White – my personal favorite)

Weekly InstaFaves

Hello, my name is Kathryn and I am an Instagram addict.

I love taking pictures.  I snap photos all the time.  My friends are so accommodating (and know that it is coming) they will tell me to take a picture quickly so they can start eating their food.  I lag behind everyone when we’re walking anywhere so that I can get the shots that I want (usually while shouting, “go on ahead, go!”).  It has always been that way and I do not see an end of it in sight.  When I heard about Instagram I instantly thought, “Oh my gosh, it’s my song, they’re playing my song!”  I’ve been dancing along ever since.  The best thing, other people share my love and participate as well!  There are people like me!  I can follow along and share in the small things that delight them and share the things that make me stop and smile as well.  It is great!

Here are some of my favorite Instagram posts from this week:  (I didn’t crop out their screen names so that they get the credit for the photos, none of these are mine, and so that you can find and follow them as well)

…and of course, YoungHouseLove just added a new addition!

I love getting to share in people’s lives & interests.  I’m on there as “steelmagnoliakate” and I get so excited about sharing pictures of nonsense with strangers.  My friends and family can attest to that fact.  I hope that people who share my struggle can relate.

Goings On

I’ve been LOVING spring so far (even the chilly parts).  Richmond, Virginia is a gorgeous place, especially in the spring and fall.  Taking in the beautiful scenes could be a fulltime job.

My weekend was dedicated to running errands and finishing season 3 of Game of Thrones (thank you HBO for generously putting up all 3 seasons at once so I could waste away in obsession in front of the television, I really appreciate it!).  I did carve out a wee bit of time, however, to sit and enjoy an early Sunday morning of coffee and reading on the patio at a local Panera.  I relish moments like that!  I spent Monday evening with a friend perusing the mall until I couldn’t walk any longer without snoring.  I’m an old lady at heart and an early bird by nature; I can’t stay up past my bedtime without serious turning into a pumpkin issues.  Last night was spent doing my state taxes, because, you know, it was April 15th.  This upcoming weekend is going to be wonderful and I can’t wait!  I have plans to go see the new movie Heaven Is For Real with a friend and then I’ll be attending the annual Monument on Parade for Easter in Richmond.  It’s an odd affair, not really a festival or a parade, but more of a mixture of the two on one of the loveliest streets.  I’m crossing my fingers for good weather.  (You hear that Mother Nature?!  Good weather.)

I hope you’re having a wonderful week.

Spring Shorts

Can we just take a moment to ogle J Crew Factory’s latest spring shorts?!  I showed you some of my favorite spring sandals in an earlier post, now it is time for some of my favorite shorts!  We have to show off the gams in the warmer months, so make sure you do it in style.  Made for great quality and extreme cuteness at a reasonable price (I usually shop the factory instead of the flagship stores because of that) J Crew is always dependable for both.  Through the years I’ve also grown to love shorts that extend further than the parts you are trying to cover up (which is unfortunately one of the many reasons I personally do not or cannot shop at Hollister) and J Crew offers different inch lengths for some of their shorts.  If you feel comfortable in 3″, 4″, or 5″ shorts, you have the choice between the three in most of their solid colors.  I love having that modesty/comfort option.  These are some of my spring choices:

They usually sell out quickly so if you find something you like, it’s best to go ahead and grab it.  The clearance section is always fun to browse through as well.  Make sure you sign up for emails if you like their items (or with any company you fancy that has an email list for that matter) because they change up sales often and you don’t want to miss out when they have a great sale & free shipping!
